Hurricane Katrina had disasterous effects on the community. The damage to New Orleans was caused by failing levees. Their floods consisted of stand still water from the surrounding bodies of water.
In Mississippi, water came from the gulf, across the roads, pummeled buildings and just kept moving. Homes were leveled; jobs were destroyed, and lives were lost - appoximatly 1836. These scary statistics make it the deadliest U.S. hurricane since the 1928 Okeechobee. One women interviewed on a Mississipi television station quoted that 'They went from being the Jetson's to being the Flinstones in one day'.
People who were fortunate enough to return home, were not able to make contact with friends or relatives becasue there was no form of communication as all the phone lines were down. Curfews were held coast wide at 6PM Law enforcement ensured this to prevent looting. Katrina caused a lot of change; People moved, never to return, even life long citizens. Many people who lost their homes had to empty their savings accounts just to rebuild. Some weren't able to get their jobs back.
